Imagine walking down to your basement and finding your basement flooded with rain water or water that has trickled in from the ground. This can be a very frustrating and costly experience for home owners. Sump pumps can be your protection against preventing basement floods, which could cause damage to your basement and everything in it including furniture, clothes, supplies, and appliances.
What is a Sump Pump?
Example of a new sump pump.
A sump pump is a pump that either pumps water from the foundation under your basement to the outside of the home or into a drainage pipe system. Sump pumps are essential for houses located in high flood areas or in houses where the basement is below the water table level or sewer lines. Many sump pumps are electric pumps, while others use the home’s pressurized water supply. Sump pumps consists of four major parts: a ground water collection system, a sump tank, a pump, and an outlet drain, that all work together to keep your basement a flood-free area.
Types of Sump Pumps
There are two types of sump pumps. The first and most common type is the pedestal pump. A pedestal sump pump has a hose that protrudes up through the tank’s cover and is mounted to a motor, which is above floor level. On a separate metal rod there is a float, called a float switch, which looks similar to a float inside a toilet. The float moves up and down according to the water accumulating in the pit. The motor is activated when water reaches a certain point, causing the motor to pump the water out. Because pedestal pumps are located above floor level, the noise from the motor can easily be heard. They are easy to access for maintenance and easier to install. Pedestal pumps also need a brace to stabilize them to prevent breakage when the pump gets wet.
The second type of pump is a submersible pump. A submersible pump is located inside the sump pit, below floor level. They are completely concealed inside a sump tank in order to prevent electrical short circuits when water gets into the pit. The pump and motors are found under the cover. The submersible pump is activated when water fills the pit and causes a float to rise to a vertical position. The float contains a switch which is located in a hard plastic bubble and activates the pump and the water is pumped out.
Sump Pump Maintenance, Repair and Installation
Sump pumps need maintenance, just as your car or household appliances, and they can ensure the most protection if they are in tip-top shape. General cleaning is one maintenance task that should be performed often as dirt or other particles carried in by the water, can clog the pump. The life of a sump pump depends on how many times you use it and the area in which you live. It is recommended that you have it inspected by a professional every year or as often as every few months.

Consequences of Having no Pump or a Failed Pump
A flooded basement due to lack of a sump pump or a sump pump failure is very costly. Not only do you risk losing valuable items, but you can pay a hefty price for restoring your damaged basement in cases where insurance won’t cover the damage. Estimated costs can vary depending on how much water there is in the basement, basement size, costs to pump out and dry the basement properly, and replace appliances, ceilings, walls, and other items. These costs can easily range from $500 to $10,000 and up.
