5 HVAC New Year’s Resolutions for Homeowners

Did you know that 45% of Americans make at least one New Year’s resolution every year? And while we’re guessing that the ones you made as the ball dropped this year may have involved things like losing weight, getting better at balancing your check book or hitting the gym more often we’re here to urge you to add a couple more from this list, for the sake of your home and your own comfort over the next twelve months.

Schedule an Annual Checkup

No matter how new or old your HVAC systems are they will benefit from an annual checkup and now is a great time of year to schedule one. There’s quite a lot of winter left to go but summer’s not too far away (we hope) so to make sure that you stay as warm – and then as cool – as you’d like in 2017 make that checkup appointment now.

Learn to Play the Numbers Game

Lowering your thermostat by just a few degrees in winter and then raising it by the same amount in the summer really will save you more on your energy bills than you might imagine and it will reduce wear and tear on your HVAC systems too, extending their useful life.

Go Programmable

To make sticking to the previous resolution a lot easier now is also the time to seriously consider sapping your old, traditional thermostat for a new programmable one. Programmable thermometers are more affordable than ever before and what’s even better is that they are smarter too.

Programmable thermostats can be set so that you don’t waste heat or cool when no one’s home, the programming can be changed on the fly in case of a sudden cold snap or heat wave and in most cases they can now be controlled from anywhere, with the help of an app on your smartphone!

Change Your Filters Regularly

Ideally, your HVAC filters should be changed every three months, or a little more often if you smoke or have furry family members living in your home. Changing your filters on a regular basis helps to extend the life of your systems and keep the air that you and your family breathe in cleaner.

Most people actually do know this though, they simply forget to make the switch at the right time. To avoid this, set yourself a calendar reminder in the same way as your do for a dentist’s checkup or Grandma’s birthday.

Don’t Wait and See

There’s a funny banging sound when your heat kicks in and it’s a little worrying, but nothing’s gone wrong yet. Why not wait and see what happens before you call in the pros? And is that puddle of water under your A/C unit an actual problem or just a result of it working a little harder because it’s a very hot day? Well, rather than call for a service maybe YouTube has the answer.

Every year people ignore little signs that something might be going wrong with their HVAC systems or just adopt that wait and see attitude we just mentioned. Then they end up having to call for an emergency repair when their heat goes out or their A/C just quits and dies on them.

While we do have emergency techs available 24/7 to help, prevention is always better than cure, so if at any point this year you suspect there may be a problem with the HVAC systems in your home give us a call sooner rather than later. Your HVAC systems – and your family – will thank you.
