Pre-Fall A/C Maintenance to Keep Your Home’s Cooling System in Tip Top Shape

As the summer temperatures start to give way to chillier fall and winter weather, you will no doubt be preparing to retire your A/C system for the year and start preparing to make the switch to heating, rather than cooling your home.

However, even though its time is nearly up for another year it’s still very important to keep up with your air conditioning system’s maintenance. Making sure that you give your A/C system some well-deserved end-of-summer maintenance will help ensure that your system will be in good working order next season (and you won’t be left hot and bothered once the warm weather does return.)

With this in mind here is a look at some of the most important things you should do right now to keep your A/C system in tip-top shape:

Clean or Replace Your Air Filter

Not only can a dirty air filter negatively impact your A/C system’s performance, but it can also affect your home’s indoor air quality negatively. Although some filters can be cleaned it is actually always a better idea to have your air filter replaced before retiring your A/C system at the end of the season.

Clean the Coils

The evaporator coil inside of your A/C system’s air handler has collected plenty of dust and debris throughout the season. It has to, as that is just the way an air conditioner works. A blocked evaporator coil can have the same effect on your A/C system’s performance as a clogged air filter, so it’s a good idea to give it a good scrub-down using a soft bristle brush and a mild detergent solution (ensuring that the system is completely turned off first of course)

Check the Condensate Drain and Drip Tray

Carefully inspect the condensate drip tray below the evaporator coil for any signs of damage. You should also check the condensate drain for any blockages that could prevent your air conditioner from draining properly.

Clean the Condenser Coil

In addition to cleaning the evaporator coil, you should also clean the condenser coil located within the outdoor condenser cabinet. Remove as much debris from around the cabinet as possible prior to cleaning the coil itself.

Get a Professional Tune-up

A little preventive maintenance can go a long way when it comes to your A/C system. A trained HVAC technician can check refrigerant levels, lubricate mechanical components and perform a variety of other essential tasks requiring special tools and training. These kinds of checks are some of the best ways you can help extend the useful lifespan of your A/C system as well, so are certainly a great investment.
