Is This Fall the Right Time to Retire and Replace Your Air Conditioner?

Every summer, you rely on your air conditioning system to provide reliable cooling whenever you need it. And while some maintenance issues can -and should- be solved with a simple service call to your Kansas City HVAC repair specialists, there are some issues that are indicators that your system is coming to the end of its useful life and that it’s time to replace rather than repair.

As fall is rapidly approaching, and you won’t be needing your air conditioning system running every day for much longer this year, now is great time to take a closer look at it to determine if it will still be up to the job next summer. Here are just some of the signs that your air conditioner may be ready for retirement:

Simple Age

The lifespan of most air conditioning units is around 10-15 years. If your unit is around that age, or even older, it is a safe bet that you should plan on replacing it soon. When you do decide to choose a new system, make sure that it Energy Star labeled, as that means the system has been designed to meet the highest in energy efficiency standards.

System Always Seems to be Running

Increasing inefficiency is another sign that your AC may be beyond help. This can range from your system running too long without actually cooling your home to a noticeable, unexplained increase of your utility bills. There may be a number of smaller causes for these kinds of events and you should have the system professionally checked, but be prepared for the bad news that it’s time for your AC system to be retired and replaced.

A Rise in Indoor Humidity

Humidity outside is one thing, but when the humidity starts to increase in your home, even though your AC is running, it’s a clear sign that it just may not have what it takes to get the job done anymore.

If the humidity levels are rising this is not an issue to ignore or plan to deal with later. In addition to a stuffy hot home, increased summer humidity levels can quickly lead to mold and mildew issues that are a completely different problem that can be far more troublesome than a home that’s a bit too warm.

An Increase in Dust

Your air conditioning system is designed to help filter out the dust or harmful air particles in your home. If you start to notice more dust in your home, and you have cleaned and replaced its filter, there may be leaks in your ductwork, or your system might be starting to fail.

Too Many Costly Repairs

This one is simply a matter of financial common sense. As your air conditioning systems age, just like aging humans, bits of them start to slow down and the number of times you have to make a repair call to your HVAC professional become more and more frequent.

At this point you need to get your calculator out and figure out which would be cheaper; keep paying for an increasing number of service calls or just start afresh with a brand new system. And often the latter will be the better bet.
